Greetings, my name is Jordan Bohl, and I design and create scenery that populates the world presented on stage for audiences to experience.
How did you get into theatre?
Though I did not grow up a theatre kid, I still had an active imagination and I enjoyed coming up with stories to be shared with my friends. I got a taste for theatre in high school from being in Junior Skit Night at my high school and later taking a theare class my senior year. It wasn’t until I took classes at Calhoun Community College that I got plunged into the world of theatre when I decided on a whim to audition for Hamlet. No, I didn’t get the title role or one of the other leading roles. I got Marcellus: Captain of the Guard. Sounds cool, eh? Great - we’ll leave it at that. That role alone set me forth on this strange journey I have been taking for the past 15 years.
How did you go from acting to being in tech?
I actually did both starting out. I was impressed with the set we were performing on for Hamlet and I definitely wanted to learn how to build scenery. After moving on to a four-year school (The University of Alabama at Birmingham), I continued to do both for a little while until halfway through I found myself focusing more on scenic design and less of being an actor.
So were you any good at acting?
I had my moments when I shined, but I found that working in the technical side of theatre came a little more natural to me and even began enjoying it more than being on stage. I still get the itch every so often to be on stage.
What are you doing now?
I am currently in my third and final year of grad school at The University of Alabama as a MFA candidate for Technical and Scenic Design.
